Roofing materials are commonly estimated in “squares.” One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Use this calculator to convert roof area into squares and add a planning waste allowance.
What Is a Roofing Square?
A roofing square is a unit equal to 100 square feet of roof surface. It is used for shingles and many other roofing quantities. It should not be confused with the home’s floor area.

Why Add Waste?
Cutting around hips, valleys, roof edges and penetrations creates material waste. Complex roofs generally require more waste than simple rectangular roof sections. The appropriate allowance depends on the specific roof and material.
